Strengthening ABE Through Lived Experience: Debora’s Journey

Debora began her ABE journey in 2018. Originally from Mexico, she entered at an NRS ESL Level 6, determined to strengthen her English skills and build confidence in a new country. Over time, she grew not only in language but in leadership and community involvement.

Her dedication and positive attitude stood out, and in 2021 she secured a position as a teaching assistant at Mankato ABE. To prepare, Debora worked hard to build her digital literacy skills, completing multiple Northstar Digital Literacy Certificates and showing her commitment to continuous learning.

In spring 2025, Debora completed the Community Interpreter Training through ABE and became a certified community interpreter. This credential expanded her impact at the school, allowing her to support new students by interpreting for them and helping them feel welcomed from their very first day.

Debora also assisted with the U.S. Citizenship Preparation Course, tutoring students and helping them prepare for their interviews and exams. Inspired by the learners she supported, she decided to pursue her own goal of becoming a U.S. citizen and proudly passed the citizenship test in spring 2025.

Debora’s transformation from learner to trusted staff member is an inspiring success story. Her lived experience gives her a deep understanding of how to encourage and guide others on their educational journeys. Today, she supports students with compassion, skill, and insight—making her an invaluable member of the Mankato ABE team.
